Emergency

...having to be elsewhere quickly!

There is nothing more frightening than a message of an emergency in your family. If the kindergartner fell from a tree, the schoolchild is feverish, your partner had an accident or an elderly person fell… you have just a few minutes to clarify and decide: "What am I working on, what do others have to be informed about?", what must be canceled, taken on or who can substitute or excuse you from meetings? And go for it!...

 

Managerial staff – what you need to know

  • The employer must be immediately informed about a sudden and short termed absence caused by an emergent situation relating to a family member.
     
  • Confirmations as well as relevant application forms are to be sent afterwards (through official channels).
     
  • Employees are entitled to 5 days of paid care day release per year. For sick children under 12 years of age, further 5 days are possible. Care day release can be taken for full days, half days or for specific hours.

  • Furthermore, special leaves to a certain extent can be granted.

  • The communication line should be clear and understandable to all people concerned. An unpredictable emergency can affect everyone. Knowing the information line even before such a situation occurs is helpful for all those involved. If clear common regulations on how and who has to be informed in such cases are already defined, they can be communicated in your team/department/Institute.
     
  • Long term considerations: is there a suitable substitute arrangement? What responsibilities have to be done at all events, in case of a sudden emergency. How and by whom can these responsibilities be taken over?
     
  • Due to family needs, other forms of leaves of absence might be a solution. Please contact us, in order to receive information on these options.

General/scientific staff – what you need to know

  • Immediately inform your supervisor/colleague about your sudden absence due to emergency as well as a return date, if possible.
     
  • Inform yourself beforehand of the common communication line in such cases.
     
  • Sick/doctor’s notes or any other absence notes must be sent through official channels afterwards: please remember to take the corresponding note with you.
     
  • With the appropriate absence note or sick/doctor’s note,  you are entitled to 5 days of paid care day release per year, for sick children under 12 years of age, further 5 days are possible. Care day release can be taken for full days, half days or for specific hours.
