It is important for childcare to be well organised all year round for you to be able to combine studying/working and family life with children. Here you can find important information concerning childcare places and registration.

In nurseries, children up to the age of three are cared for in groups of 10 to 14 children. Children can start attending at any age.

Day-care parents take care of up to four children at their home, treating them as part of the family. It is often easier to organise individual times (15 hours per week or more) with day-care parents than with institutions. You can organise childcare for toddlers, kindergarten children or to supplement your child’s regular morning school classes.

In kindergarten, children aged three and up are looked after in groups of 25 until they are old enough to start school.

You need to have your main residence in Graz in order to be eligible to register at a childcare centre in Graz. Costs are staggered according to income using the city’s tariff model.

You can register for Graz childcare centres every year between January and the first week in March. Childcare is available as of September. Please make an appointment with the manager of the childcare centre of your choice - even if you have filled in the registration form online: here you can find information for registration in the relevant time frame for institutions provided by the City of Graz.

Choose three centres which have concepts and opening times that suit you and which you are able to get to.

You can register for day-care parents wherever you have your main residence. Costs depend on the age of the child and the number of childcare hours needed. You can take advantage of a sibling discount. The parental contribution is staggered according to income if your child is older than 3 and has not yet started school.

ABI-Service by the City of Graz supports families with main residence in Graz and informs on available childcare places: abiservice(at)stadt.graz.at, phone 0316/872-7474.

As a member of the University of Graz unikid & unicare informs and supports you in your search for suitable childcare options for your child/children – in particular if you do not have a residence in Graz yet or you need short-term childcare or childcare beyond the regular start in September.
